Hard Sells & Wishlist

HARD SELLS

Please note that there’s nothing “wrong” with these stories, and we may publish stories featuring these topics from time to time. They either appeal to a very narrow subset of readers OR are a major turn-off for many readers. Listed in increasing level of “no thank you”.

  1. Stories with eye trauma or lots of vomit. (The editor will probably stop reading. It’s not you, it’s her.)
  2. Stories that haven’t been polished or proofread.
  3. Lady!whump. (The editor enjoys lady!whump, but only about a quarter of our readers do and we published some in Issue #1.)
  4. Stories prominently featuring bigotry of any kind.
  5. Stories that are solely hurt or comfort.
  6. Whump of minors.
  7. Fiction that ends in a major character’s death.
  8. Stories about living people (“real person fiction”).
  9. Sexually explicit stories.
  10. Rape-centric fiction.

WISHLIST

Wince is particularly interested in publishing works that don’t “fit” elsewhere, that celebrate underused tropes, or that allow common tropes to play out to the most satisfying extremes. Stories that combine tropes will be especially well received.

Right now, for fiction, we’re particularly interested in:

  • Stories with great characterization.
  • Science fiction and fantasy stories where the fantastical elements are leveraged for unique effect.
  • Kidnappings, field surgery, whump fics featuring extended recovery, drowning, found families.
  • Top-notch writing, cleanly presented.

For nonfiction, we’d like:

  • Well-researched explainers.
  • Personal narratives.
  • Book reviews, especially featuring whumpy excerpts.
  • Articles on writing whump.
  • Articles on medical topics.
  • Interviews.
  • Reviews of old h/c and whump-related content.
  • Permission to archive old zine/web ring/LJ era meta.
  • Fandom histories.
  • Listicles recommending fanfiction with a certain trope, fic in a certain fandom, etc.
